Goals, tasks, financing and bodies of the Working Community of the Danube Regions

The Province of Lower Austria laid the foundation for the Working Community of the Danube Regions in 1982.
The official founding date is 6 November 1989. Today, the Working Community consists of 41 European Danube regions. This includes 39 permanent members and two regions with observer status (regions that are interested in a membership).
In cross-border working groups projects on various topics regarding the Danube region are implemented.
Goals
- Promoting collaboration among the members
- Developing the Danube region for the benefit of its inhabitants
- Furthering peaceful cooperation in Europe
Tasks
The Working Community of the Danube Regions considers itself a
- Representative of the regions
- Driving force for the EU Strategy for the Danube Region
- Think-tank for activities in the Danube region
- Network for stakeholders in the Danube region
Financing
- Members cover their own costs
- No membership fee
- Financing proposals are made by the working groups in the course of deciding on projects
Secretary General
The Secretary General’s office of the Working Community of the Danube Regions handles the following tasks:
- Administrative tasks in the run-up to meetings
- Coordination and documentation
- Facilitation and networking
Chairmanship
In 2016/2017 the Working Group is chaired by the Slovak regions of Bratislava and Trnava.
The chairmanship handles the following tasks:
- Presiding over the conference of heads of government
- Representing the Working Community of the Danube Regions to the public
- Coordinating contents
History
The history of the Working Community of the Danube Regions dates back to the year 1982, when the Province of Lower Austria proposed to initiate a “Danube region” as a forum for talks. Following many cross-country preparatory talks, the time had come on 6 November 1989: the Working Community of the Danube Regions was officially founded.
Today, the Working Community of the Danube Regions is a vital hub of European cooperation.
